Students Undergo Safety Training in Compressed Gas Usage

Franklin County Technical School (FCTS) was awarded a $3,000 Workplace Safety Grant through the Department of Labor Standards to fund training for safe handling of oxyacetylene gases in the Landscaping and Horticulture, Automotive Technology, and Collision Repair and Refinishing programs.

Oxyacetylene systems use highly combustible gases under high pressure, thus requiring strict safety protocols.  Oxyacetylene gases are widely used for cutting, welding, and brazing. The training was provided by long time FCTS associate and trainer, Burt Riendeau with assistance from welding instructor, John Passiglia and junior welding students, Brandon Janik and Tanner Jenks.  This training ensures that students understand:

Correct setup and shutdown procedures for oxyacetylene equipment.

Safe handling and storage of gas cylinders to prevent leaks or explosions.

Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to mitigate risks associated with burns, eye injuries, and respiratory hazards.

Emergency response procedures in case of gas leaks or fire hazards.

Without a comprehensive safety education program, students may develop unsafe habits that put themselves, their peers, and future employers at risk.

By leveraging the grant funding for this training, FCTS not only protects the students but also strengthens workforce readiness, employer partnerships, and compliance with state and federal regulations.  FCTS continues to prioritize safety and produce highly skilled, safety-conscious graduates who are ready to excel in their careers.
