MCAS at FCTS
What is MCAS?
- The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) is a set of statewide standardized tests that students take starting in elementary school.
- While in high school, students take MCAS tests in English, math and science. At FCTS, our students take these tests in grade 10 in March, May and June.
- MA State law requires that high school students meet the Competency Determination standard to graduate; most students meet the standard by earning a passing score on all three MCAS tests.
- Most students pass the MCAS tests, but there are other ways to meet the Competency Determination. Students can retest in 11th and 12th grade, students can meet the determination through an Education Proficiency Plan (EPP), or through an appeals process.
- Students with disabilities are entitled to testing accommodations.
How can my student prepare?
Students at FCTS take courses in the 9th and 10th grade to support the academic knowledge and skills students will need to pass their MCAS tests. For most students, participating in the standard FCTS curriculum will prepare them for success in English, Math and Science MCAS testing.
For students or families that are interested, The MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has an MCAS Resources Web site. The site offers practice tests, general information, tutorials, and more.
